EL CENTRO — The Mayan Hotel at press time is currently being knocked down by a demolishing crew Monday morning, July 19. The historic hotel on 595 W. State Street in El Centro was gutted by fire in February 2021. Demolition started at 9:30 a.m.
“The demolition crew first tore down the east side wall,” said Anna Garcia, code enforcement officer with the City of El Centro. “Debris will be sent for analysis to study the presence of asbestos which would determine how the debris will be disposed.”
Heavy equipment was on site to demolish and move debris to the parking area of the hotel. A crew sprayed water to keep down any dust from spreading in the neighborhood.
The demolition will take about a week to completely tear down the building, according to Garcia.
